Chapter 8

Janelle sensed his hesitation until he set his cup on the counter. This wish must be something big because Dean did not seem the type to be hesitant about anything.

He stared over her head, as if deep in thought. She remained quiet, giving him time, while anxiously awaiting his response. Finally, his eyes shifted to hers, but he didn’t speak.

“It must be a biggie.” She tried to lighten the mood, but he didn’t smile.

“How long do genies live?” His question took her off guard, not that she was really on guard. Though it did snap her head back.

“For a very long time.” She tilted her head, staring at him. “Why?”

“Because I thought I knew what I wanted until I met you.” His voice was deep, his stare intent.

His words sent a chill of pleasure over her body, despite not knowing what it was he wanted. Just the way he said it made her feel somehow special. This man really did have a way of making her feel this way. In all honesty, she should be frightened that her trust of this man was not in question. She didn’t trust easy, but with him she did.

“And what is it that you want?” She again sensed his hesitation. “Just speak the words, but don’t wish them yet so it won’t be granted.”

“To be human.” This time there was no hesitation, and she knew it was because of her reassurance.

“Really?” She tried to keep the surprise out of her voice, but failed miserably. “But why would you want to be human?”

“I’m tired of being a prisoner. Look.” He nodded toward the windows that were heavily shuttered. “I’m stuck in darkness until the sun goes down.”

Janelle did turn to look, realizing she had missed this detail since she herself resided in the darkness of some sort inside her lamp. She could definitely sympathize, but this was a wish of all wishes. “You do know that once a wish is granted, it cannot be unwished.”

“No, actually I didn’t know that.” He ran his hand through his hair with a frown.

They sat silent, each lost in their own thoughts. She was the first to break the quiet. “What did you mean by ‘you thought you knew what you wanted until you met me’? I should never be the reason for you to stay away from what you really wish for.”

“Because, Janelle, before you, there was really nothing keeping me here for another hundred years.” Once again, Dean’s point-blank response had her head snapping back in surprise.

“But you barely know me,” she whispered, not knowing what else to say.

“You’re right, I don’t.” Dean’s half grin was back, and she loved seeing its appearance. “But in this short time, I know that I want to spend a hundred years getting to know you. Does that shock you?”

At first, she wanted to shout, yes! It did shock her, but in reality, it didn’t because if she were honest with herself, she felt the same way about him. Instead of trusting her voice, certain it would be shaky with hope, she just shook her head.
